Welcome! I wanted to take a minute to talk a little about myself. I have a retired Search and Rescue Dog who is a German Shepherd named Lib. She was a Humans Remains Detection Dog. Even though we have not "officially" trained for 3 years, she still knows what to do. Just today, I placed a hidden training aide in a field where we walk. She had no clue that I had done that, when I took her for the walk, I could tell when she smelled the aide. She ran right to it, and alerted like a pro. Makes me so proud.
Okay, what I am going to Blog about? I am going to go over some simply training techniques that anyone can do. These first techniques will be on obedience. That is one of the most important things that ANY dog must know. They need to come when called, especially if you live near a street where they can get hit my a car. They need to know not to jump on people or kids visiting your house. I will also post some games that we use when we are training puppies. These will help you bond with your dog. Because if the dog does not bond with your family, it will not listen to your commands, or behave either. Please feel free to try these, and let people know how you did.

That is so cool that you have a retired search and rescue dog! Did you do the searches w/her or did you adopt after the fact?
ReplyDeleteIf you check out my blog you can see my therapy dog Sugar - not nearly the same thing as a search and rescue dog - but we still have fun doing visits!
I got her, trained her, and worked with her. She was suppose to be a police dog, but they lost their funding. So I was able to adopt her instead. We worked for about 4 years before I had to go on maternity leave, and she had an FHO for her hip dysplasia. She really likes being the babysitter in my house, but she does miss working.
ReplyDeleteMy two dogs tend to jump on people when they first walk in our house. I can't wait to read how to make them stop jumping up when they are excited.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to read your tips. We recently got a puppy from the SPCA and I need him fully trained before we return to school because things get really crazy then and I will not have as much time.
